The right to redundancy compensation

The majority of New Zealand workers have no right to redundancy compensation. It is fallacy that many employees can bargain for redundancy compensation; the power imbalance is significant and operative. Most businesses have the ability to pay redundancy compensation. The quality of debate in Parliament on this important issue has been poor.

We know that in response to the global financial crisis and also in response to the Christchurch earthquake disaster, the National Party Led Government intervened like socialists or communists in helping employers and employees. But in Parliament, the National Party reverted to right wing ideology in opposing redundancy compensation.

The Redundancy Bill which the now labour Party Leader- Andrew Little, advocated for, is a serious menace to small businesses. Small businesses must be encouraged and supported. Perhaps create a redundancy funds-scheme to assist small businesses.

The quality of debate must improve and go beyond ideology -name -calling as has been the case so far. The law can be developed to give all New Zealanders a fair shake when a business is re-structuring or folding- up. Pragmatism!
